Yeasayer at Neumo's on 4/20
Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 5:52AM As I stepped up to the front of the venue to meet my friends, I saw John Roth staring into space, defeated. Chanel greeted me with a smile but I immediately saw the concern in her eyes for her husband. His face paint had been washed off leaving some black on his neck and ears. The doorman would not let him in with such a costume. I could tell John was furious. He couldn't even talk. I was baffled too. Why can't people dress up for shows anymore? You can get in if you have a spike through your nose, but you can't come in with face paint??? Granted, it was a skull on his face, but still... I'm sure Yeasayer would have been flattered to have some tribal participation from the audience.
The light show was perfectly on key with all the electronic arpeggios, trash cans sounds, and snare cracks. Chris Keating's live vocals were heartfelt and believable. He joked around with a few strangers in the audience in between songs and made everyone feel apart of what was happening on stage. In reality, no one could attempt to jump up there and do what they were doing, but he made it feel like you could. And that is why I love this band. So ahead with the technology, yet so down to earth. If only we could learn to nurture nature with such technology. Oh wait, we can.
